Alphabet

An alphabet poem, that is the rub

Could it be as good as what dear John did

Eloquent, flowing, full of clever stuff

Got to admit it’s going to be tough

Imagine they did ‘em days of the Raj

Kings near and far would come have a ball

Meeting these poets of fabled renown

Ordinary folk too also would stop

Quietly listening, perhaps for an hour

Sharing in this joyous linguistic treat

Unusual now we’re obsessed with TV

Where minds are consumed by that little box

Yielding to what they dare to call showbiz

An alphabet poem has thirteen lines, each with the same number of syllables (ten in this case). The first line must begin with the letter ‘a’ and end with the letter ‘b’; the second line begins with a ‘c’ and ends with a ‘d’… and so on.
